Meet Our New General Manager: Chrissy Sailstad

Dear ReStore family,

In November, I took over as your ReStore General Manager. For those of you who don’t know me, I have a BA from Vanderbilt University in “Gender, Race, and Public Policy” and an MBA from Elon University.  I’ve been married to my husband, Ryan, for five years and we have a beautiful and energetic three-year-old daughter, Grace.

It has been an honor to serve as your Store Manager for 2.5 years, but now as the GM I have the opportunity to work more closely with both affiliates (Durham and Orange), strengthen our presence in the community through new partnerships, and foster better teamwork among the ReStore staff in order to further Habitat’s mission.

Now join me in recapping our best year to date:

Best of the Best

  • Because of your donations, purchases and volunteered time, we were able to build six more Habitat homes (from our profits alone!) for deserving families in Durham and Orange counties. Thank you!

  • We received 330 donations from 206 businesses. The furniture, building materials, appliances, and home goods that local businesses sent our way has amounted to a whopping 230+ tons of waste being diverted from area landfills! To learn more about our business donors, click here.

  • We launched a series of satisfaction surveys in order to learn how we can improve our services. To take the volunteer survey, click here. To take the donor survey, click here. To take the shopper survey, click here.

  • We celebrated our Lucky 7th Birthday and kicked off our Seven for Seven campaign. To recap all of the fun birthday celebrations, click here.

  • We also received lots of new media coverage! ABC11 featured our Back to School discounts for students, WCHL did a live broadcast from our store, and The N&O featured the work of one of our avid shoppers who designed her entire home using our ReStore.

  • This year we started accepting mattresses and paint. We also now offer an e-recycling program that allows donors to bring their printers, ink cartridges, cardboard, etc. to the store and we will recycle those items for you. To learn more about our e-recycling program, click here.

New Year, New Hopes

  • Become more accessible. We are officially open seven days a week: Mondays-Saturdays 10am-6pm and Sundays 11am-4pm! The demand for affordable housing in Durham and Orange counties is increasing by the day. Another day open, means another day that we are raising money to build more Habitat homes.

  • Improve our appearance. Over the next few months you will notice the facelift slowly start take place: we’re painting the building (thanks for the donation Sherwin Williams!), adding more signage, building a new mission wall, etc. in order to create a more user-friendly, eye-appealing environment for our shoppers, donors and volunteers.

  • #MakeitaHabit. We want to encourage the Durham and Orange county communities to #makeithabit in 2017 to donate, shop and volunteer. PS- have you seen our new #MakeitaHabit video campaign? Click here.

  • Ramp up the Uniquely Upcycled section of the store and start offering monthly workshops for the public on DIY, design, home improvement, and more. Know someone who would be Interested in hosting a workshop in 2017? Click here to send me a note.

  • Launch a pilot program for e-receipts. We’ve partnered with Suite IQ to help us go green by providing paperless receipts for our donors. Our friends at Habitat Wake are already doing this, so we decided to join in on the fun. This system will create a database of all donations you make throughout the year, so at any point you need a tax-deductible receipt, we can email it to you.

And most importantly, we want our ReStore to become the tangible representation of the Habitat for Humanity mission. Through our actions out in the community, our physical appearance of the store, and our accessibility to hosting numerous events and home improvement opportunities we will shine light on the work our supporting affiliates do to build hope and homes locally and around the world.

I would love any feedback, praises, concerns, and ideas for the ReStore. All you have to do is hit the reply button and type away. This is your store and I want you to continue to love shopping, donating and volunteering here in 2017.

Again, thank you for making the work I do every day so fulfilling.
