Getting Started as a Decon Volunteer:
To begin volunteering with our Deconstruction Program, a prospective volunteer simply needs to contact our Volunteer Program Manager about his/her interest in Deconstruction. They can be reached at (919)403-8668 Ex. 103 or at volunteer@restoredurhamorange.org. They will speak with any potential volunteers to explain the program further and to respond to any questions or concerns of the volunteer. Once the volunteer has decided on Deconstruction, his/her name will be added to an announcements list for upcoming deconstruction shifts. Signing up to volunteer for a shift is done in response to the announcements. Upon the first shift at a deconstruction site, new volunteers will receive an orientation and be asked to fill out a Liability Waiver. This waiver can be read and filled out prior to a shift by emailing our Volunteer Program Manager. The Deconstruction waiver is different from the waiver for In-Store Volunteering.
Scheduling:
Deconstruction Projects needs Volunteers Tuesday-Saturday for the duration of each project. Volunteers are asked to choose either an AM shift (generally 8:15-12:15) or a PM shift (generally 12:00-4:00). Shift times may change in accordance with the work of certain projects. Exact times are made known through the announcements list.
Age Requirements:
Due to the nature of the work, Deconstruction Volunteers must be age 18 or older.
Dress Code:
Volunteers must wear closed toed shoes on Deconstruction sites. Tennis shoes are fine, but volunteers are encouraged to wear work boots, if possible. Volunteers should wear comfortable clothing that they do not mind getting dirty, and they should bring an alternate shirt or jacket to wear when riding in their car after a shift. All clothing should be appropriate for working as a volunteer; inappropriate clothing includes: offensive images or words, sagging pants, shorts shorter than mid-thigh, low-cut shirts, and headgear not in accordance with religious guidelines or functional for current weather conditions.
Group Volunteering on Decon Sites:
Groups are more than welcome to participate in the deconstruction process. To schedule a time to volunteer, please have someone from the group contact our Volunteer Program Manager at least one week in advance. The Volunteer Program Manager can be reached (919)403-8668 Ext. 103, or at volunteer@restoredurhamorange.org
Impact:
Volunteers are necessary for completing Deconstruction projects in a timely manner as to increase the number of projects the ReStore can complete each year. Each Deconstruction project gives revenue to the ReStore, and in doing so, directly impacts our mission by increasing the amount of money we can provide to our Habitat affiliates to build more homes for deserving families in the local community.
