More on In-Store volunteering

Getting Started as an In-Store Volunteer:

To begin Volunteering with the ReStore, potential volunteers are asked to contact our Volunteer Program Manager to set up an introductory meeting.  They can be reached at (919)403-8668 Ex. 103 or at volunteer@restoredurhamorange.org.  The introductory meeting is designed to determine if there is a good fit for the volunteer in the store based on the volunteer’s interests, skills, and availability and the ReStore’s opportunities.  The meeting also gives the potential volunteer the chance to learn more about the ReStore and ask any questions he or she has.  Prior to conversation, potential volunteers are asked to fill out an Intake Form.  It can be filled out at the beginning of the meeting, in advance by emailing the Volunteer Program Manager, or by picking it up during a visit to the ReStore.  There is no commitment necessary at the end of the meeting, but, if interested in moving forward upon the end of conversation, the volunteer can schedule an orientation and/or first shift.

Scheduling:

In-Store Volunteers are needed at all times while the ReStore is open.  Hours of OIn-Store Volunteerperation are Monday-Satuday from 10:00am-6:00pm.  Volunteers are asked to schedule themselves for a Midday Shift from 10:00-2:00 or an Afternoon Shift from 2:00-6:00.  Flexibility from these times is allowed in accordance with the needs of the individual volunteer.

Age Requirements:

In-Store Volunteers must be at least 13 years of age.  Volunteers ages 13 and 14 must volunteer with a parent or guardian.  All Volunteers between the ages of 13-17 will be met with in advance to determine if the ReStore is a good fit for their volunteering interests.  They will also need a parent or guardian to sign their Liability Waiver before they can begin volunteering.  The Waiver can be accessed by emailing our Volunteer Program Manager at volunteer@restoredurhamorange.org

Dress Code:

Volunteers must wear closed-toed shoes and be dressed comfortably and appropriately for their performance of duties.  Inappropriate clothing includes: offensive images or words, sagging pants, shorts shorter than mid-thigh, low-cut shirts, and headgear not in accordance with religious guidelines or functional for current weather conditions.

Validation of Hours:

All Volunteers are asked to log their volunteering hours on a timesheet.  This action makes it easy to validate a volunteer’s hours if need be.  So, if you’re tracking hours for your resume, for school requirements, for Habitat ownership, or for other purposes, we are pleased to accommodate you!

One-Time or Short-Term Experiences (Individual or Group):

There are many tasks that can be done in the store without a long-term commitment.  To see such tasks and learn more about a one-time or short-term experience, please click on the “Group Volunteering or One-Time Volunteering” position description on the Opportunities page.  All prospective Group Volunteers or One-Time Volunteers are asked to notify Rachel in advance of the date they wish to volunteer in order to properly set-up the volunteering experience.

Impact:

Volunteer tasks are designed to contribute to our daily operations, enhance our store quality, and increase the satisfaction level of our donors and customers.  Such tasks directly impact our mission by increasing sales and increasing the amount of money we can provide to our Habitat affiliates to build more homes for deserving families in the local community.
